Look at this tiny peanut! She slept so peacefully and barely made a peep until the end of the session. Her parents had originally contacted me for a newborn session, but after seeing their proofs, they rolled into my Baby's First Year Plan.

I don't require "signing up" for the baby plan until you've had the first session. I understand that budgets can be tight these days, and I know I wouldn't want to pay up front until I see the results of the first session. Quite often, parents love their baby's images so much that we roll right into the Baby's First Year Plan with no problem. :)

Back to this beautiful family now... they requested a generational photo and a quick family shot, and then we continued with the newborn session.

Look at this little sweetheart! She was 11 days old at her session and very nosy. She didn't want to miss a thing. We did manage to get her to sleep for a few minutes which was just long enough to get some sleepy shots. Sometimes (many times) baby sessions don't go as planned! :) You'll be seeing her again throughout her first year when she comes back for her 6-7 month session and 1 year session.

When did you start making cakes?

I started making cakes in 2007. I had bought my son’s first two birthday cakes from Charm City Cakes. After I had my twin girls in 2006, we had to watch our finances so I had two options left: buy more traditional cakes or start making them myself. I always wanted each birthday to be special for my children and wanted to give them very special cakes, so I have taught myself through the years.

What got you interested in making them for other people?

My mother in law was showing a co-worker photos of some cakes I had made and she really liked them and wanted me to make her wedding cake. Word starting spreading and I began to receive more requests and of course I wanted to make every cake I was asked to do.

Do you watch a lot of the cake/baking reality shows?

I go through spurts of watching them. I have watched Ace of Cakes (which is where my son’s first two birthday cakes came from), Cake Boss (actually saw him when he came to York at The Strand), along with many other cake competitions. I enjoy watching them since I am self taught, I am always able to learn something.

What are your favorite cakes to make?

My favorites are probably first birthday cakes. It is such a special event and I am honored that people ask me to make the first cake their child will taste. I give the birthday boy/girl their smash cake as a gift from me, and I always smile while making it because I know it is going to end up in pieces and all over the child.

What do people request the most?

Most people are pretty standard with their cake flavors choosing chocolate or vanilla. As for the fillings… people love to try different flavor combinations but I think my most common flavor combination is: chocolate or vanilla cakke filled with my raspberry mousse.

I'm mentally preparing for my next family photo session which will be featured in the summer issue of Smart Magazine. You can sign up here to get this great local magazine in your home!

Smart asked me to put together a list of tips to help prepare for your family session. Here they are:

1. Well-fed children behave so much better than hungry children even if it means eating an early dinner. I can't stress this enough!

2. Bring non-messy snacks and drinks for kids. On location sessions may mean you're in the middle of a park and not near a water fountain or vending machine.

3. Early morning and early evening are the best time for outdoor sessions. Let your photographer know when your child does best. A 6pm session with a child who goes to bed at 7pm doesn't go well. Try to avoid scheduling during a regular nap time also.

4. Don't over prep your child before the session. Creating expectations will usually end up with you feeling frustrated.

5. Let the photographer interact with your child. Sometimes the best shots happen when the parents aren't right there.

6. Bring along your child's special toy or lovey. It helps little ones feel more secure when they're in a strange place and not really sure what's going on (blanket, stuffed animal, rocking horse, chair, etc)

7. Bring along a change of clothing for children in case of an accident or fall. (I had a girl slip on the boat launch and fall into the water once...)

8. Coordinating colors are best. Avoid stripes and shirts with logos. Keep it pretty simple and comfortable. An uncomfortable toddler isn't going to be easy to photograph.

9. If you wear glasses, take them off or wear contacts (if you have them) to avoid glare.

10. Have fun! Just play it cool. The best shots are the ones that show the real connection between family members.

Spiral bound proof books. The one below is 5x7 with rounded corners and is the perfect way to show your family and friends the images from your session. Proof books are currently available with my highest digital package and also available a la carte.

When you order digital collection 2 or 3, you'll receive this beautiful leather CD case. It comes in its own satin lined box. A small image from your session will be added to the slot in the front of the case. These are so classic and simple and are the perfect way to safely store your session disk.

This family came from Gettysburg, PA (they own Tommy's Pizza in Gettysburg) to have baby Brett's newborn session. He was 5 days old and weighed over 10 pounds at birth. He was too big for some of my props! Here are a few from his session.

Say hello to baby Lucas! This family came to me in December for a mini maternity session and came back shortly after Lucas was born. Lucas was very alert and decided that he would stay awake during the session rather than sleep (despite all of my efforts). Hopefully he slept well for mommy and daddy when he got home. :)

Apparently my partner, Marinda, has an internet obsession. I would never be brave enough to admit such a thing. Ha! My issue is sweets, and drink a ton of hot tea. I had brownies with icing for breakfast AND lunch today, thankyouverymuch. Back to healthy eating tomorrow... :)

Are you pregnant? Have a friend who is expecting? Starting in 2011, I have a great little extra for my newborn clients! I've been working with my aunt in Michigan for a while now, and she has been knitting away! If you book a session and end up ordering one of your baby's images wearing one of my aunt's hats, you get to keep the hat as a memento! (One hat per baby. Offer expires at the end of 2011.)

Here are some of the hats she has made so far... Contact me for details about newborn sessions! Those occur when baby is about 5-10 days old, so please get in touch with me before baby is born. :)

Every week, we each shoot an image with that week's theme in mind. Trina has a broken wrist which is NOT GOOD for a photographer! Her image on the left was taken with her cell phone. :)

Long Beach Island, NJ

Our first "real" summer vacation as a family of 5! For the past few years, we've been afraid to travel very far with all 3 kids, so now that our boys are 4, we were all ready. The kids LOVED the beach and tell me every day that they want to go to the beach again. So cute. :)

Next summer, we plan to go to a different beach. LBI isn't cheap for rentals, so we'd rather get more bang for our buck rather than staying in a so-so place for $$$. If you have any suggestions, let me know! We're open to Delaware and New Jersey beaches (and definitely not Ocean City, MD).
